Treatment-Resistant Depression

TMS is FDA-approved and covered by most insurances for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) when medication and psychotherapy have not been effective. If you are struggling with depression or OCD and have not responded well to conventional treatments, TMS can likely help.

Reduced Side Effects

Compared to some medications used to treat depression and other conditions, TMS therapy does have fewer side effects. This can be especially appealing for individuals who have experienced adverse effects with traditional medications.

Non-Invasive Procedure

TMS is a simple, non-invasive procedure, meaning it doesn't require surgery or implantation of devices. This can make it an attractive option for those who want to avoid invasive treatments.

Targeted Treatment

TMS can be precisely targeted to specific regions of the brain associated with the condition being treated. This targeted approach can potentially lead to more focused and effective treatment outcomes.

Minimal Downtime

TMS treatment sessions typically last around 20 minutes and do not require anesthesia. Patients can resume their daily activities immediately after a session, making it a convenient option for those with busy lives.

Potential For Multiple Conditions

While depression is the most well-known use of TMS, it has been explored for other conditions such as anxiety disorders, autism, bipolar disorder, substance use disorder, and certain neurological conditions like migraine and chronic pain.

Just like many medications are prescribed for non FDA-approved conditions or diagnoses, many TMS providers do offer TMS for conditions that are not yet FDA-approved.

Research & Clinical Evidence

Some individuals may be drawn to TMS because of the growing body of research and clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness for specific conditions. It's important to note that the efficacy of TMS can vary depending on the condition and the individual.

Alternative To Medications

TMS therapy can be appealing to individuals who prefer non-pharmacological approaches to treatment or those who wish to reduce their reliance on medication.

Custom Treatment Plans

TMS treatment plans can be tailored to the individual, taking into account their specific condition and needs. This personalized approach can be a significant advantage. Talk to a TMS specialist or your doctor to learn how which TMS treatment protocol is best for you.

TMS Therapy is HOPE for REMISSION from DEPRESSION and other mental health conditions

Although it doesn't provide a permanent cure, TMS therapy offers hope and enduring relief for most patients who fail to experience benefits from or cannot tolerate the side effects of medications. It also can provide long-lasting relief from debilitating symptoms.

MYTH: TMS Is Like 'Shock Therapy' Or Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

FACT: ECT operates by administering direct electric currents to the patient's head while they are under sedation and unable to move, deliberately inducing a "therapeutic seizure" to restore the brain's functionality. ECT is linked to temporary cognitive consequences that frequently, though not invariably, hinder self-sufficient living throughout the duration of ECT treatment.

ECT, or electroconvulsive therapy, may have additional side effects apart from its intended benefits. These can include headaches, muscle aches, nausea, temporary changes in heart rate and blood pressure, as well as temporary arrhythmias. Although rare, there is also a possibility of experiencing long-term memory deficits as a result of ECT. Due to these potential complications, ECT is typically not considered as a first, second, or even a third-line treatment option, unless the depression is severe, rapidly worsening, or accompanied by psychotic symptoms. The invasive nature and associated risks of ECT often necessitate patients to take a temporary break from work and psychotherapy, and may require the assistance of caregivers or hospitalization.

TMS offers a more gentle approach compared to ECT, as it does not require the application of direct electrical currents to the patient's head. By magnetically stimulating a specific area of the brain, TMS activates the brain's healing process without causing global seizures or cognitive dysfunction. This method has minimal side effects, allowing patients to stay awake and comfortable during treatment.

Additionally, TMS enables patients to maintain their daily routines, work, and engage in activities that promote remission, such as psychotherapy and exercise. In contrast, ECT is often considered too extreme for individuals with less severe depressive symptoms, making it challenging to continue with daily activities.

MYTH: TMS Is Just A Placebo Effect And People Who Improve Just Believed That It Worked

FACT: During clinical trials, 1 in 2 patients significantly responded to TMS therapy, and 1 in 3 reached complete remission. Since TMS was first FDA-approved in 2008 for major depressive disorder, there have been millions of treatments performed with average remission rates well over 50%. Depending on the TMS system used and level of experience of the physician and TMS Certified Technician, many TMS clinics are seeing remission rates as high as 75%.

MYTH: TMS Is Expensive and Not Covered By Insurance

FACT: TMS is covered by most insurance plans for the diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) when a patient has not responded to traditional forms of treatment, such as medications and psychotherapy.

Many insurance plans are now covering TMS for other conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

There are a few TMS clinics that do not accept insurance and the treatment can range from $5,000 to $10,000 depending on a number of variables, such as the treatment protocol, experience, geographic locations, etc.

MYTH: TMS Is Not Effective and Just a Waste Of Time?

FACT: Regardless of the type of treatment you are considering, you should always do your research. There are numerous research and study articles that can be found online that prove the efficacy of TMS therapy. Nearly 70% of patients who elect TMS as a treatment option for major depressive disorder (MDD) have a significant reduction in symptoms and/or complete remission.

Clinical data also shows that TMS can be an effective treatment for a number of other mental health and neurological conditions. It’s always best to research facts rather than opinions and/or patient reviews.
